When you cross the threshold of the restored Chatham Railroad Station, now the home of the Chatham Railroad Museum, you cross a timeline back into the days of railroad history. Owned by the town of Chatham, the museum is housed in the original depot, built in 1887. The building itself (a rare example of Victorian architecture) is one of the few visible remains of the old Chatham Railroad, a branch railroad only 7.03 miles long, that once connected Chatham with the Old Colony Railroad main line in Harwich. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, was founded in 1954. Our mission is to encourage and advance understanding of our natural environment through discovery and learning. The museum is housed in a 17,000 square foot building on its own 80-acre site, abutted by 300 acres of town-owned conservation land. There are two floors of exhibits about the flora and fauna of Cape Cod, including exhibits on whales, indigenous birds, and coastal change, and several aquaria holding different species of crustaceans, mollusks, fish, frogs, turtles and snakes. Falmouth Museums on the Green are located on a two-acre complex in the heart of historic Falmouth village. Two 18th-century houses showcase period furnishings, china, toys, vintage clothing (including a “laundry room” filled with Victorian underwear), fine art and heritage quilts. Special exhibits capture the excitement of Falmouth’s 19th-century whaling industry, the “science” of pre-Civil War medicine (you’ll be happy you live today!) and the life of Katharine Lee Bates, Falmouth-born author of America the Beautiful. South Cape Beach, located between Waquoit Bay and Vineyard Sound, contains a wide variety of coastal environments, including barrier beach and dunes, salt marsh, scrub oak/pitch pine woodland and "kettle" ponds. A magnificent white sand beach stretches for over a mile. Newly constructed over-the-dune boardwalks, a small parking area and bathrooms make this a lovely place to spend a day at the shore.
