Cotuit Library
871 Main Street - Cotuit, MA (508) 428-8141
Black History Heroes, Soldiers and Spies is a 45-minute production which was created to celebrate the stories of Black American heroes. It is best appreciated by audiences in third grade and up. A number of important figures from American history are brought to the stage to share the importance of their work. Audiences will join the courageous Buffalo Soldier, Colonel Charles Young as he helps settle the American West and some of our first National Parks. They’ll also meet The Tuskegee Airmen as they take flight to help win WWII and Mary Elizabeth Bowser as she spies for the Union during The Civil War. “The goal of this show is to get audiences excited about moments in history which aren’t often talked about,” says David Ostergaard, the Company’s Founder, “Our actors have the unique task of researching and taking on the character traits of some of the bravest individuals from America’s past.”

Each year, Bright Star Touring Theatre serves nearly 1,500 audiences in schools, theaters, libraries, museums and more across the country. They offer a wide variety of curriculum-based programs ranging from The Pirate of Bully Bay to Heroes of the Underground Railroad. “We travel with everything we need and we can perform just about anywhere,” says National Tour Manager Reeni Dowd. “Our actors join us from all over the country and they sometimes visit ten different cities each week, playing a huge variety of characters. It’s a great way for them to flex their acting muscles!” The company performs regularly at the National Theatre in Washington DC and has gained international attention, having visited Russia and Germany with their productions. February 23   BIRDING IN PERU, AMAZON TO ANDES
Cotuit Library
871 Main Street - Cotuit, MA (508) 428-8141

Boasting vast Amazonian jungles, a long Pacific coastline, and astounding altitudinal habitat diversity, Peru is neck in neck with Columbia for the most bird species of any country in the world. Club board member and Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay science coordinator Mark Faherty will take us on a journey through Peru's wild Amazon lowlands from north to south, up to the lakes of the high Andes, then to the cloud forests of the eastern Andean slope, and finally the coastal deserts of Lima. In addition to the expected parrots and monkeys, we'll also see the prehistoric Hoatzin, the endemic Inca Wren, some flamingos, and maybe even a Horned Screamer, whatever that is. We'll even visit a remote Amazonian village and the famous Incan citadel of Machu Picchu.

Mark has been the Science Coordinator at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary since 2007 and has led birding trips for Mass Audubon since 2002. While his current projects involve everything from oysters and horseshoe crabs to bats and butterflies, he has studied primarily bird ecology for the last 20 years, working on research projects in Kenya, Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. He was a counter for the famous River of Raptors hawk watch in Veracruz, Mexico, and has birded Peru, Africa, Panama, Belize, and both Eastern and Western Europe. Mark leads workshops on birding by ear, eBird, birding apps, and general bird identification. He is past president of the Cape Cod Bird Club and member of the Massachusetts Avian Records Committee. Mark’s weekly essay on Cape and Islands bird life, the “Bird Report”, airs each Wednesday on the Cape and Islands NPR station, where he also co-hosts “Bird News”, a monthly call-in show all about birds, on The Point with Mindy Todd.
